What We Celebrate at Christmas

“ But he (Joseph) had no union with her (Mary) until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.  Matt 1:25

The actual birthday of Jesus was sometime in the fall (September or October), rather than in December. The date is of lesser consequence, however, than the reason for the celebration (Isaiah I: 18). Heaven itself celebrated the birth (Luke 2:8-14). And after the shepherds got over their fear, they couldn't stop telling the news.

Then there were the wise men from the east who came to worship the one "born king of the Jews" (Matthew 2: 1-2). They got there well after the birth, having put their lives on hold, and willingly gave of their time and treasures to honor this great King while they rejoiced with "exceeding great joy" (Matthew 2:10). Surely all Christians should worship and rejoice as well as open our treasuries when we celebrate Christ's birth.

But if we just focus on the birth, we may miss the greatest reason for the commemoration. After all, there was nothing uncommon about the physical process. But the conception, now that was miraculous (Luke 1 :35)! The eternal "Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). The great Creator and Son of God, "foreordained before the foundation of the world" (I Peter 1 :20), submitted to the will of the Father and "made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7). That was why heaven celebrated.

Counting back nine months from around September puts us pretty close to the end of the previous December. Perhaps our sovereign God has orchestrated events so that we would celebrate the real miracle of the conception: "God with us" (Matthew 1:23).

CHRISTIANITY vs. WORLD RELIGIONS

Today there are multitudes of religions, cults, and philosophies competing for the hearts and minds of men and women all over the world. One of the philosophies, atheistic communism, seemed for a while to be so powerful and persuasive that many feared it would conquer the world (And is trying again). A religion which also is seriously attempting to do that right now is Islam, which is structured around the menacing  teachings of a false god called Allah.  There are many other religions with false gods or no god in the world today.  The philosophy of Evolutionary humanism is also growing rapidly.  How can we know which "religion" is the true religion? Or are they all just different paths to the same goal or god?  NO!

Let’s just look at some startling statistics.  There are about 6+ billion people in the world of which there are between 2-3 billion Christians, depending on the survey you use.  The population of the unreached people groups, those who have not heard the Gospel of Jesus with a specific language, is approximately 2.5 billion or 39% of the world’s population, which brakes down to 6,878 people groups.  For example, of India's 2,327 people groups, 986 have populations over 10,000, the largest being a Muslim group, the Sheikh at 71,142,900.  Isaiah 66:18 states: "The time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and see My glory."
