Dear Friends: This is the 17 th edition of the ProJesus Letter.

Daniel Webster said: “If we abide by the principals taught by the Bible, our country will go on prospering, but if we and our posterity neglect its instruction and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.” So, with what Mr. Webster had to say about 200 years ago, how is life going for you? Are you as puzzled as I am with all that is taking place in the world and especially in “our” United States? How do you define United? Our states are to be united, but, especially we are to be united with our government. That fellow we call “Abe” once said: “….that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” What did President Lincoln mean by his words? Not in my life time has there been so much chaos in our nation and especially in our government. What’s going on?? What direction is our government and nation headed? What is the basis for that direction? John Adams said: “Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only Law Book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited…” What a paradise would this region be!

The Declaration of Independence further declares: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Happiness – what is it really? It is not hedonism (indulgence) or self-gratification. The pursuit of happiness, one Founding Father said in the Declaration of Independence, is a God- given right. But the word happiness as the Founders used it has been drained of its meaning in our commercialized culture. What the Founders had in mind was the classical meaning – what the Greeks and the LORD called, the virtuous (ethical) life. This can be achieved only by righteous living, decency, honor and doing good as described in the Bible. This is the understanding and way of life that must be restored to the American life. What we long for isn’t boundless riches that will rust and fade away. What we desire is a sense of significance and value – of human dignity that can only be achieved as we grow in our walk with Jesus.

When asked about what kind of government has been drafted for the people, Ben Franklin responded, “A Republic, if you can keep it”. A Republic form of government is one in which the head of state is not a monarch and the people have an impact on its government. In the United States, Founding Fathers like James Madison defined republic in terms of representative democracy. In modern political science, republicanism refers to a specific ideology that is based on civic virtue and is considered distinct from other ideologies. Article I V of the Constitution of the United States "guarantees to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government. Remaining a Republic is not easy for our nation just as remaining a Christian nation is not easy in this pluralistic world. We have a battle on our hands in both areas. However, Jesus gave us a promise. He said in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “…if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

If we as Christians will apply this verse to our lives and our country, then just maybe Jesus will heal our land. Are we all ready to pray for God’s will in our lives and in our country and for Wisdom and Discernment for our leaders? Jesus will not forsake His promise if we do our part, as a nation, and pray in His will. Let’s all just do it. Read 2 Chronicles 7:14 again
