WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE?
What is your purpose in life? Or, do you believe that you have a number of directions (purposes) in which your life could or should go? Our aim (or purpose) in life may be to get a good job, or get married and have a family, go to college, travel, or any number of directions.
We all will have various goals (purposes) in our life's including hobbies, entertainment, friends, etc. and they will vary greatly from person to person. Let's take for an example, our purpose to find a job and all the variables within the job itself.
You probably have many reasons (purposes) for applying for a particular position at a particular company. Say, you are a Mathematics Teacher. Do you want a company (school) that has scored high or low on the state exams? Do they have positions for the type of math that you teach? What are the ages of the other math teachers and the Dean of Mathematics? What are your chances of promotion in the future? Does this school have special requirements for teaching? What is the pay scale and what are the benefits? In discussing this possible job position, we have listed nine different questions (purposes) you might have before you would consider taking a position at that school. Multiply that by the decisions we make in all areas of our lives and we come up with hundred's, even thousand's of purposes we consider.
Other questions will come to mind. Why am I here? How did I get here? Who put me here? What am I to do with my life? With all this being considered, what should be the greatest purpose in our life? We would definitely get a wide variety of answers from different people.
Let me now ask another question. What is the purpose that Jesus has for you and me? What is Jesus' purpose in Romans 8:28? "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified." The word for "purpose" is prothesin, meaning Jesus' plan. The word "called" means more than being invited to receive Christ; it means to be summoned to and given salvation.
So, just what is Jesus' plan? There are 66 books written about the subject, The Bible! Therefore, to try to describe Jesus' purpose, His plan, in a few words is very difficult. However, in a few words, Jesus purpose for coming to earth was to save us from eternal damnation and provide a way, through Him, to enjoy eternal life with Him in Heaven.
Going back to the first few words of this article, "What is your purpose in life". I mean what should our Main purpose, in life, be? I tell people that Jesus is number one in my life. He is also number two, three, four, five etc. Do you get the idea? Jesus should be first in EVERY aspect of your life. If He is not, start right now by asking Him to show you the way to peel potatoes, how to cut the grass, what dress or suit to buy, what to say in your meeting and on it goes.
Jesus wants to be a part of your every day events not just during the times when you have problems. Take a moment right now and ask Jesus about your next project and to help you remember to talk to Him on a daily even hourly basis. Jesus is your best friend, He wants to talk to you but He won't force Himself on you. Open your heart to Jesus.
