Wives

Why do some in the Bible have more than one wife?

The Bible in Romans 3:23 states: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. The Bible doesn’t just show the good in people, it indicates their failures as well. All have flawed: there is not one perfect person, except Jesus. The people in the Bible with more than one wife thought they knew better than God. But the Bible is clear that a man shall have one wife. Following are a few examples: Mal 2:14 “The LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth”; Prov 31:10-11 “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her”; Prov 5:18-19” Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth. As a loving deer and a graceful doe”. Let us further take an example from the requirements of the leaders titled “Bishops” and “Deacons”. 1 Tim 3:1-3 & 8-12: “Faithful is the saying, If a man seeks the office of a bishop, he desires a good work. The bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach; no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money”…………… “Deacons in like manner (must be) grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them serve as deacons, if they be blameless. Women in like manner (must be) grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling (their) children and their own houses well.” So, it is clear that Solomon and others like him did wrong. But, 1 John 1:8-10 states: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He (Jesus) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
